Letter to Glasgow

There are hidden stories all over Glasgow – on the thresholds of old churches, in the corner of a park where a name is inscribed on a bench, under the dust in the shed at the bottom of the garden or among the old photographs in that box under the bed. In Scotland’s Year of Stories, we are inviting you to write a Letter to Glasgow about your own hidden story and you could win £500 (adults) or £50 and concert tickets (for winners in the children’s and young people’s categories).

Please read the following rules carefully before submitting your entry.

1. The competition is being organised by Glasgow Life and the Gaelic Books Council.
2. There are three competition categories: a) for children of primary school age; b) for young people of secondary school age; and c) for adults.
3. Only one entry is allowed per person.
4. All entries should be in Scottish Gaelic. The judges will be looking for the best ideas, and entrants will not be penalised for errors in spelling or grammar. The winning entries may be edited before publication.
5. The maximum word limits are as follows: 500 words for adults, and 250 words for primary and secondary age entrants.
6. Entries should be submitted as an email attachment in Word format. The covering email should include the writer’s name, address and telephone number, and the category they are entering (Primary, Secondary or Adult), but the file attachment containing the letter itself should not include the writer’s name or any other identifying information, as entries will be judged anonymously.
7. Entries should be sent to [email protected] by 9 September 2022. Entries received after that date will not be considered.
8. The winners will be decided by a panel of judges selected by both organisations.
9. Winners will be notified by email on 23 September 2022, and the names of the winners will be announced on the Glasgow Life and Gaelic Books Council websites on 23 September.
10. The winners will agree to their work being published on the websites of the Gaelic Books Council and Glasgow Life, and in associated media releases, and to their work being performed at an event on 19 October 2022 at the Royal National Mòd in Perth. The copyright remains with the author.
11. The winner of the adult competition will receive a prize of £500 and their work will be published in STEALL magazine.
12. The winners of the children’s and young people’s competitions will receive a voucher for two tickets to a family friendly Celtic Connections concert in 2023 and book vouchers to the value of £50.
