This book ‘The Most Enduring Saint’s Fable - Mirror of Humanity and Glimpse of God’, which Sandy NicDhòmhnaill Jones wrote in 2021, is the result of an exciting and significant commission. The Royal Irish Academy commissioned the work at the beginning of this year; requesting a substantial suite of poetry to commemorate 1,500 years since St Columba’s birth. It comprises a suite of 17 ‘Cantos’, with a wide variety of poetic forms, styles and moods, and plentiful symbolism. The poet reflects on a range of events, actions and influences in the saint’s life, and many aspects of his legacy. Sandy herself created the English translation, and published the book through Sallan Ltd in October 2021. She is now at work, with a fellow-composer, on music settings for some of the ‘Cantos’ in the plain-chant style.
Máire Ní Annracháin MRIA wrote about this book: This is a mesmeric suite of poems… exalted and transcendent. A perfect structure, one poem for each century, with Ì -Iona – at the centre.”
