The Reverend Malcolm Laing was a gifted storyteller – both in Gaelic and in English. His fourteen Gaelic short stories were all broadcast on BBC radio between 1954 and 1967, and were read to him under the title Sgeul na h-Aon Oidhche. They also appeared posthumously in Gairm between 1996 and 2002. When Gairm ceased publication in 2002 after fifty years, there was a gathering to celebrate its achievements. Professor Donald Meek chose Malcolm Laing’s story Is Math an t-Annlan an t-Acras as the best prose he had read in Gairm
The Gaelic and English poems in this collection were written between 1932 and 1945 and were published in various Gaelic and English periodicals. The Gaelic and English stories are often autobiographical or based on local historical events. Most of the stories are set in his birthplace of the Uists and Benbecula, though one is about his time in Applecross and another is about Doctor George Henderson, the great Celtic scholar, who was his lecturer at Glasgow University.
