William Gillies, holder of the Chair of Celtic Languages, Literature, History and Antiquities in the University of Edinburgh from 1979 to 2009 has made an immense contribution to Celtic scholarship and is renowned internationally as a pre-eminent scholar in not one but many different fields within the discipline – linguistic, literary and historical.
