Join Petra Poncarová, Ian MacDonald and Rob Ó Maolalaigh to discuss the work of poet Derick Thomson and celebrate the publication of Derick Thomson and the Gaelic Revival at the Gaelic Books Council in Glasgow.
Derick Thomson’s poetry ranks among the best in the Gaelic language and he contributed to the preservation and development of Gaelic as an editor, journalist, scholar, and activist.
Thomson instigated a number of ventures aimed at promoting Gaelic and had a major impact on Gaelic studies as an academic subject. In 1968, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Gaelic Books Council at the University of Glasgow, and is today the namesake of the Derick Thomson Poetry Prize at the Gaelic Literature Awards.
Petra Johana Poncarová is a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Glasgow. In 2020, she published The Gaelic Poetry of Derick Thomson (Scotnote Study Guide) with the Association for Scottish Literary Studies, and her first monograph, Derick Thomson and the Gaelic Revival, came out from Edinburgh University Press in 2024.
This event will be in English.

Join Christopher Whyte in the Gaelic bookshop to celebrate the publication of his new poetry collection Non dimenticare gli angeli (Don’t Forget the Angels), an anthology of 30 years of Gaelic poems with facing-page translations into Italian. The translations won the Premio Rilke 2023 and it is first time ever an entire book in Scottish Gaelic has been published in Italy. It therefore marks an important milestone in getting readers on the continent acquainted with contemporary Scottish writing.
Christopher Whyte will be in conversation with Niall O’Gallagher, the 2023 Crowned Bard of An Comunn Gàidhealach.
Christopher Whyte is a Gaelic poet with many accolades. After a distinguished academic career teaching Scottish and Gaelic literature in Rome, Edinburgh and Glasgow, he moved to Budapest, Hungary in 2006, where he writes full-time. His work is characterised by its innovative, at times provocative, subject-matter, and by the resolute adoption of a European perspective.
This event will be in Gaelic, Italian and English. All welcome.
