A new edition of the classic work on the island’s Old Norse place-name heritage which was originally published in 1954. While many authors have written on the place-names of Lewis, and commented on the high proportion of names of Norse origin, few have had the knowledge of Old Norse which Magne Oftedal could bring to bear on the subject. Hence the significance of this contribution, which has stood the test of time and from which we can learn much today.
Through this new publication, it is hoped that Magne Oftedal’s stimulating insights will reach a larger audience throughout the islands and further afield so that the importance of the Norse heritage of Lewis can be more widely appreciated.
