Gairm, which lasted from 1952 to 2002, was the most prolific Gaelic periodical of the 20th century. It’s longevity was a result of the labour of its editors: Finlay J. MacDonald, from 1952 to 1964; Donald Iain MacLeod, from 1966 to 1976; and Derick Thomson, who was at the helm from start to finish. Many different types of Gaelic writing and art were nurtured by Gairm, in particular, the short story and contemporary poetry.
This book aims to make Gairm accessible not only to those with an interest in periodicals, but also to a new generation of readers and scholars. Part one of the book contains a record of each issue of which there were 200. The second part is an index of the names of the writers and their contributions to Gairm.
The book also contains an introduction by Ronald Black, which recounts Gairm’s history and its special place in Gaelic literature.
