Dòmhnall Iain MacDhòmhnaill (1919-1986) was born and raised in Peighinn nan Aoirean in South Uist. After serving in the Second World War, he returned to the island of his birth to work as a crofter. During his life he collected a large amount of folkore for the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University.
Republished in 2019, MacDhòmhnaill’s book, Uibhist a Deas tells the history of South Uist from the formation of its geology to the culture and customs of its inhabitants.
