Letter to Glasgow 2023

Posted on 24 July 2023 in Latest News

Is there a building in Glasgow that holds a special significance for you? Whether it’s a grand church, a quirky shop, a cute wee cottage or an ordinary house, Glasgow Life and the Gaelic Books Council invite you to write a Letter to Glasgow (in Gaelic, ‘Litir gu Glaschu‘) about a building that means something special to you.

As in previous years, submissions should be in Scottish Gaelic, but this year we also have two new categories for ages 18+ – you can write your Letter to Glasgow in Scots or Ukrainian!

Prizes for each category:

Gaelic language (Adult, 18+) £400

Ukrainian (Adult, 18+) £200

Scots (Adult, 18+) £200

Gaelic language (Secondary School)
£50 book token, plus family ticket for Celtic Connections 2024 concert

Gaelic language (Primary School)
£50 book token, plus family ticket for Celtic Connections 2024 concert

The winners’ work will also be presented at an event at the Royal National Mòd in Paisley.

How to enter
(Please read conditions carefully before writing and submitting your letter – see below*)

Entries should be submitted by email to [email protected] with the title Letter to Glasgow. The deadline is Sunday 17 September 2023 for a chance to win. There will be one winner selected from each category.

*Conditions
All entries must be in Scottish Gaelic, Ukrainian or Scots.

Entries must be under 500 words for Adults, and under 250 words for entrants in Primary or Secondary school.

Entries should be in Word format as a file attached to your email.

The email should include your name, home address, telephone number and the competition category (Primary School, Secondary School or Adult), but please don’t include your name or anything that reveals your identity in the letter itself, because all the letter will be passed to the panel so they can be  judged anonymously.

Winners will be informed by email on 7 September 2023, and the names of the winners will be published on the Glasgow Life and Gaelic Books Council websites on 29 September 2023.
