Hector MacDonald was born in 1853 on a small farm, 'Rootfield', in the Black Isle near Dingwall. He earned great renown for himself and for the Gaels in the Afghan, Indian and African wars and rose to be both a major-general and a knight of the realm. Although a cloud hung over him latterly, the Gaels never lost their respect for him. This is the first history written in Scottish Gaelic about his life.
