Description
Perhaps best known for his magisterial History of the Celtic Place-Names of Scotland, Professor William J. Watson also wrote a number of fascinating papers on the subject of place names, most of which are to be found in this volume. Place names throw a light on to our history, sometimes in unexpected ways, and Watson was adept at winkling out the often revealing meanings hidden in our names of places, many of which date back hundreds of years. Religious sanctuaries, Celtic saints and Norse invaders all left their mark and are considered in this book.
With an introduction by W.F.H. Nicolaisen.
