Ar Guthan

Those first steps towards getting your work published can be the most daunting. How do you connect with the publishing industry and submit your script? Ar Guthan offers new Gaelic writers an opportunity to get professional feedback and mentoring from editors and publishers to help them do just that.

Ar Guthan is a partnership between Creative Scotland and the Gaelic Books Council. We want to hear from writers who are working on a novel, creative non-fiction book, or collection of short fiction, and who have not had a book-length work published before. There is a simple application form to fill in, and we also want to see a sample of your work in progress. Full details on how to apply can be found here.

We are not looking for poetry, children’s books or graphic novels at this time, although we may be able to help writers in these genres through future schemes.

We are particularly keen to hear from underrepresented writers, especially those living in island or rural areas, those who identify as Black, Asian or another Minority Ethnicity, as disabled, as LGBTQ+, and/or people from low-income households. All applicants must be 18 or over and resident in Scotland.

We also welcome applications from people who may lack confidence in writing Gaelic, for whatever reason. Those who would find it easier to submit their application and/or a sample of their work in progress in an alternative format are asked to contact us by phone or email to discuss this.

Further information on how to apply, and the application form, are available (in Gaelic only) here.

Deadline: 14 Giblean 2022
